"I recommend Sacred Story Writing Workshops to anyone who is looking to transform her life." - 2010 Workshop Participant

Sacred Story Work

with Dawn Thompson

You have a sacred story.

The sacred story of your life is one of a kind. There has not been one exactly like it in all of human history.

You are its author, constantly writing its unfolding. However, sometimes the stories we tell ourselves over and over keep us from happiness and from realizing our full potential. Sometimes we get stuck in old stories that no longer fit who we are. Is there a story you are telling yourself that is keeping you from happiness, from moving forward in your life? Once we identify our limiting stories we can upgrade them! We can write new stories. In Sacred Story work we use the powerful tools of visualization and story writing to reclaim our power as the authors of our own lives, leading us to personal wholeness and contributing to our collective well-being.

Sacred Story work is based upon the idea that:

  • Human beings are by nature storytellers. It is in our DNA to interpret and assign meaning. Our stories determine what we pay attention to in the world and therefore determine the reality we experience.
  • We do not create our stories in isolation. Our stories are greatly influenced by our culture, our family and our life experiences.
  • Every story we tell ourselves exists because at one point it served a valid purpose or was passed on to us.
  • *Stories can be useful and empowering. However, they can also be oppressive and limiting.
  • Our stories live in our bodies. Upflifting stories promote physical, emotional and mental well-being. Oppressive stories contribute to dis-ease.
  • Our stories have more power over us when they remain unconscious. Stories that keep us unhappy and stuck often point to hidden parts of ourselves that long for healing.
  • *We mistake our stories for the truth. Stories are not the truth. They are simply stories.
  • *We must ask ourselves: "What do I truly care about in the world? Do my stories support what I care about?"
  • We have the power to change and re-write our old stories. We can write new stories that correspond to our authenticity and our wholeness.
  • It is our responsibility to become conscious authors of our stories, both for our personal well-being and for the well-being of our collective community.

*Wording for these bullet points paraphrased from Victoria Castle's powerful book, "The Trance of Scarcity."

In the words of Sacred Story participants:

"I recommend Sacred Story Writing Workshops to anyone who is looking to tranform her life. In this workshop Dawn Thompson offered a safe and loving environment in which, through writing, I explored old stories I've been telling myself - stories that are no longer relevant and which have been holding me back from living a more fulfilling life. In addition, I wrote new, energizing stories that I can use to propel myself into a more abundant, happier life. As a result of Dawn's gentle facilitation, I was comfortable writing freely and sharing my writing with others in the group."

"...this was a radically rewarding afternoon where I was prompted  to spill my 'story' in parts and parcels, and then guided to create the opening paragraph for my next best life."

"Sacred story workshops helped guide me toward releasing old, ineffective story lines and inviting in new, age-appropriate ones. Writing and reading our creative works - and hearing others - are empowering."
